NOTES ABOUT THE MUSIC:

Sixteen Etudes for Piano is a collection that explores both pianistic technique and cultural storytelling, drawing inspiration from Diné (Navajo) traditions, landscapes, and philosophies. Each etude focuses on a distinct musical challenge while reflecting an aspect of Diné life, history, or worldview.

These etudes are not merely technical exercises but musical expressions of cultural identity, incorporating rhythmic patterns, melodic fragments, and symbolic representations that connect to Navajo traditions. Some etudes reference elements of daily life, such as “Herding Sheep” and “Crops,” while others evoke spiritual or natural forces, like “Wind,” “Tó (Water),” and “Constellations.” Certain pieces, such as “White Corn” and “Yellow Corn,” reference traditional practices and the deep significance of corn in Diné culture.

Throughout the set, various techniques are explored, from repeated notes that represent the sprinkling of corn pollen in prayer (‘White Corn,’ ‘Corn Pollen’) to fluid, ever-changing figures that mirror the movement of water (‘Tó [Water]’). Other etudes highlight pianistic textures inspired by natural elements, such as the swirling patterns of “Spider Woman’s Legacy,” which reflects the intricate artistry of Navajo weaving.

This collection serves as both a study in piano technique and an artistic bridge between classical music and Indigenous storytelling. It offers pianists a chance to engage with cultural themes while developing agility, phrasing, and expressive depth.

Each etude includes a suggested tempo marking, but performers should feel free to adjust the tempo based on their personal goals and interpretation. Slower tempos may highlight phrasing and tonal control, while faster tempos can develop agility and fluidity. Flexibility is encouraged to explore different expressive possibilities.
